Year of the Rooster: Rooster Zodiac Years, Dates, Traits and Compatibility

Every Year of the Rooster from 1924 to 2035 with exact Chinese New Year start and end dates, plus Rooster traits, best matches, clashes and Tai Sui in 2026 and 2027.

The Rooster (鸡) is sign number 10 of the twelve Chinese zodiac animals, and each Year of the Rooster comes once every twelve years. People born in a Rooster year are traditionally described as observant, organized and candid. The rooster greets the sunrise and is linked with punctuality and diligence, and the word for chicken, 鸡 (jī), sounds like 吉, meaning good luck. The Rooster matches the branch You (酉), the hours of 5–7 pm.

Year of the Rooster: exact start and end dates

A Rooster year begins on Chinese New Year, not on January 1. The Chinese calendar is lunisolar, so the boundary moves from one Gregorian year to the next, and a January or early February birthday needs checking. The table below lists each Rooster year in the Hong Kong Observatory conversion data. If you want a quick lookup for any date, the zodiac finder will do it for you.

Worked examples

The rule is simple: find the Chinese New Year date for the Gregorian year you were born in, and compare your birthday with it.

  • Born Jan 28, 2017: Rooster. This is the first day of the 2017 Year of the Rooster.
  • Born Jan 23, 1993: Rooster. The 1993 Rooster year started on this date.
  • Born Feb 9, 2005: Rooster. The 2005 Rooster year started on this day, so it counts as the first day.
  • Born in January 2017, before the 28th: not a Rooster. The 2017 Rooster year had not yet begun, so the birthday falls in the previous zodiac year, the Monkey year.

How the Chinese calendar counts years

Encyclopaedia Britannica describes the Chinese calendar as lunisolar, with 12 months of 29 or 30 days and occasional intercalary months to keep the seasons aligned. Years are counted with ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches, which form a 60-year cycle. The Smith College Museum of Art explains that the twelve zodiac animals are the twelve earthly branches, while the ten heavenly stems name the day, month and year. The Victoria and Albert Museum notes that this stem-and-branch reckoning, with its 60-year cycle, was used in China until 1912.

The Chinese New Year festival lasts 15 days and begins with a new moon between January 21 and February 20, according to Britannica. The zodiac year changes on this festival, which is why the boundary dates above do not match January 1. For background on the seasonal markers used alongside the calendar, the Hong Kong Observatory publishes a separate guide to the 24 Solar Terms.

Rooster personality in Chinese tradition

Traditional descriptions of the Rooster focus on being observant, organized and candid. These are cultural associations linked to the year animal, not a scientific test or a personal reading. A full Four Pillars (Bazi) chart uses far more than the year animal, including the stems and branches for month, day and hour.

The Victoria and Albert Museum points out that matching personality traits to each sign is a fairly recent development, and that old Chinese texts do not describe it in this way. That history is useful context: the traits are a tradition that has changed over time, so they are best read as stories and values rather than fixed facts.

Do Rooster years change birth patterns?

Because the zodiac is so widely known, researchers have tested whether it affects births. A study of Hong Kong by Yip, Lee and Cheung (2002) found that births rose 7.8% in the 1988 Dragon year and 4.2% in the 2000 Dragon year, compared with the preceding year. The authors described this as a timing effect with little effect on cumulative fertility. A study of mainland China from 1949 to 2008 by Ma Yan found no national-level zodiac birth preference, and attributed the fluctuations to population momentum.

Other studies look at outcomes rather than births. A National Bureau of Economic Research paper by Mocan and Yu reported that Dragon-born children were more likely to be college educated and scored higher on entrance exams, but that the effect disappeared once parents' expectations were taken into account. These studies mostly examine Dragon years, so they show how researchers test zodiac beliefs rather than describing Rooster children in particular.

Year of the Rooster compatibility

In the tradition, compatibility describes patterns between signs, not scores. The main relationships for the Rooster are:

  • Six Harmonies (secret friend): Dragon
  • Three Harmonies (allies): Ox and Snake
  • Clash (opposite sign): Rabbit

If you want every pairing for the Rooster, including harm, break and punishment tags, the compatibility tool lists them in one place.

Year of the Rooster and Tai Sui in 2026 and 2027

Tai Sui are the year gods in Chinese folk belief. The Kew Ong Yah Temple in Singapore explains that sixty Tai Sui gods take turns by year in the sixty Jiazi cycle, and that temples have set up sixty statues to show the set. The Tai Sui entry on Wikipedia gives more background.

The year 2026 is the Year of the Horse, as Britannica's Chinese New Year entry records. Our Tai Sui checker follows a folk year-sign rule, and under that rule the Rooster has no traditional Tai Sui relationship in either 2026 or 2027. Meeting Tai Sui is a traditional reminder to be steady and considerate, not a forecast.

How to check your sign and read more

To confirm your sign, find your birthday in the Rooster year table or use the zodiac finder. If your birthday falls in January or early February, compare it with the Chinese New Year start date for that year, since that is the boundary that matters.

Frequently asked questions

When does the Year of the Rooster start?

A Rooster year begins on Chinese New Year, not on January 1. For example, the 2017 Rooster year started on Jan 28, 2017, and the 2029 Rooster year starts on Feb 13, 2029, according to the Hong Kong Observatory dates. A birthday before that day in the Gregorian year belongs to the previous zodiac year, so January and early February birthdays should always be checked against the start date.

Is a January birthday always the previous zodiac year?

No. It depends on the Chinese New Year date for that year. Some January birthdays fall in the Rooster year, such as Jan 23, 1993, while others fall in the previous year's sign. The safest method is to compare your birthday with the Chinese New Year start date listed for your birth year, then use the year animal for that period.

Which years were Year of the Rooster years?

Recent Rooster years in the Hong Kong Observatory data are 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017 and 2029. Each one runs from Chinese New Year in its starting year to the day before the next Chinese New Year. The sixty-year cycle means these years repeat every twelve years, which is why the same sign appears again and again across the calendar.

Do people born in the Year of the Rooster share the same personality?

Traditional descriptions say Rooster people are observant, organized and candid, but these are cultural associations rather than scientific findings. The Victoria and Albert Museum notes that linking personality traits to each sign is a fairly recent development. A full Four Pillars chart looks at more than the year animal, so individual people vary widely within any zodiac sign.

Who are the best matches for the Rooster?

In the tradition, the Rooster's Six Harmonies partner is the Dragon, and the Three Harmonies allies are the Ox and the Snake. The opposite sign, the Rabbit, is the clash. These relationships describe patterns in the tradition, not scores, and a full list of harm, break and punishment tags is available on the compatibility tool for anyone who wants more detail.

Is 2026 a Year of the Rooster?

No. According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2026 is the Year of the Horse. The Rooster's next full year is the one beginning at Chinese New Year in 2029, which the Hong Kong Observatory lists from Feb 13, 2029 to Feb 2, 2030. Our Tai Sui checker shows that the Rooster has no traditional Tai Sui relationship in 2026 or 2027.
