Year of the Goat: Goat Zodiac Years, Dates, Traits and Compatibility
Every Year of the Goat from 1924 to 2035 with exact Chinese New Year start and end dates, plus Goat traits, best matches, clashes and Tai Sui in 2026 and 2027.
The Goat (羊) is sign number 8 of the twelve Chinese zodiac animals, and each Year of the Goat carries that sign. People born in a Goat year are traditionally described as kind, creative and calm. The character 羊 can mean goat, sheep or ram, so you will see all three names in English. The sign is linked with gentleness, the arts and harmony. The Goat matches the branch Wei (未), the hours of 1–3 pm.
Year of the Goat: exact dates
A Goat year begins on Chinese New Year, not on January 1. Britannica explains that the zodiac year begins with Chinese New Year, so anyone born in January or early February should check the start date before deciding their sign. If you are unsure, use the zodiac finder to be sure.
| Zodiac year | Starts | Ends |
|---|---|---|
| 1931 | Feb 17, 1931 | Feb 5, 1932 |
| 1943 | Feb 5, 1943 | Jan 24, 1944 |
| 1955 | Jan 24, 1955 | Feb 11, 1956 |
| 1967 | Feb 9, 1967 | Jan 29, 1968 |
| 1979 | Jan 28, 1979 | Feb 15, 1980 |
| 1991 | Feb 15, 1991 | Feb 3, 1992 |
| 2003 | Feb 1, 2003 | Jan 21, 2004 |
| 2015 | Feb 19, 2015 | Feb 7, 2016 |
| 2027 | Feb 6, 2027 | Jan 25, 2028 |
These dates come from the Hong Kong Observatory calendar conversion table. The Chinese calendar is lunisolar, with 12 months of 29 or 30 days, and intercalary months are added to keep it in step with the seasons, as Britannica's Chinese calendar entry describes. Because each zodiac year is tied to that calendar, the gap between one Goat year and the next is not always identical.
Worked examples: reading a boundary date
Take the 1991 Year of the Goat. It starts on Feb 15, 1991 and its listed end date is Feb 3, 1992. Here is how the boundaries sort four birthdays:
| Birthday | Zodiac year | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Feb 14, 1991 | Not the Goat | It falls before the 1991 Goat year starts on Feb 15 |
| Feb 15, 1991 | 1991 Goat | First day of the Year of the Goat |
| Feb 3, 1992 | 1991 Goat | Listed end date of the 1991 Goat year |
| Jan 21, 2004 | 2003 Goat | Listed end date of the 2003 Goat year |
The rule is the same every time: check the start and end dates for the birth year, then match your birthday against them. If your birthday falls between the two years, the boundary decides your sign, not the Gregorian calendar year.
Goat personality in Chinese tradition
Traditional descriptions of the Goat focus on being kind, creative and calm. These are cultural associations, not science, and they are shared by everyone born in the same sign. A full Four Pillars (Bazi) chart uses much more than the year animal.
The sign has a long history. Smith College Museum of Art notes that the twelve zodiac animals are known as the twelve earthly branches (dizhi), and that together with the ten heavenly stems they were used to name days, months and years. A Tang dynasty bronze mirror shows all twelve animals. The Victoria and Albert Museum adds an important caution: assigning personality traits to each sign is a fairly recent development and is not found in old Chinese texts. Treat the Goat's traits as later cultural storytelling rather than ancient fact.
Goat compatibility
Compatibility in the tradition describes patterns, not scores. The usual grouping for the Goat is:
| Relationship | Sign |
|---|---|
| Six Harmonies (secret friend) | Horse |
| Three Harmonies (allies) | Rabbit and Pig |
| Clash (opposite sign) | Ox |
This grouping applies to every Year of the Goat, so it describes the signs themselves rather than one particular year. For every pairing, including harm, break and punishment tags, see the compatibility tool.
Goat and Tai Sui in 2026 and 2027
Tai Sui is a figure from folk belief. Kew Ong Yah Temple in Singapore explains that sixty Tai Sui gods take turns by year within the sixty-year Jiazi cycle, and that temples set up sixty Tai Sui statues. For background, see the Wikipedia entry on Tai Sui.
Our folk year-sign rule set gives these results for the Goat:
- 2026 (Horse year): no traditional Tai Sui relationship
- 2027 (Goat year): Zhi Tai Sui, meaning the Goat's own year
The 2027 Year of the Goat runs from Feb 6, 2027 to Jan 25, 2028. Check the Tai Sui checker to see what the Year of the Goat means for your own sign. In tradition, meeting Tai Sui is a reminder to be steady and considerate, not a forecast.
Do Goat years change outcomes?
Some people ask whether being born in a particular year shapes how a child turns out. Research has looked at this. Ma Yan (2010) studied mainland China from 1949 to 2008 and found no national zodiac birth preference; the ups and downs in births were linked to population momentum. A separate study by Mocan and Yu found that children born in Dragon years were more likely to be college educated and had higher entrance exam scores, but that effect disappeared once parents' expectations were taken into account. Neither study covers the Goat, but the second points to parental expectations rather than the animal itself.

Frequently asked questions
When does the Year of the Goat start?
A Goat year starts on Chinese New Year, not on January 1. The zodiac year changes at that point, so births in January or early February can belong to the previous sign. Check the start and end dates for the relevant year, such as Feb 15, 1991 for the 1991 Goat year, before deciding your sign.
What are the most recent Goat years?
The table lists 2015, which runs from Feb 19, 2015 to Feb 7, 2016, and 2027, which runs from Feb 6, 2027 to Jan 25, 2028. Both dates come from Hong Kong Observatory conversion data. Earlier Goat years in the table include 2003 and 1991.
Is the Goat the same as the Sheep?
The character 羊 can mean goat, sheep or ram, so English sources use all three names. Chinese tradition treats the sign as one animal, and the Goat year is the same sign whichever English word is used. The translation choice does not change the dates.
Does the Year of the Goat affect how children turn out?
There is no evidence in the studies cited here that a Goat year changes outcomes. Ma Yan found no national zodiac birth preference in mainland China from 1949 to 2008. A study of Dragon-born children found the advantage vanished once parents' expectations were accounted for.
Is 2027 a Year of the Goat for Tai Sui?
Under our folk year-sign rule set, 2027 is a Goat year and the Goat's Tai Sui is Zhi Tai Sui, meaning the sign's own year. Tai Sui is a folk belief, and in tradition meeting it is a reminder to be steady and considerate rather than a forecast of events.
Where can I check my Goat sign exactly?
Use the zodiac finder on this site and enter your full birth date. It applies the Chinese New Year boundary, so you will see whether your birthday falls in a Goat year or a neighbouring one. The Hong Kong Observatory conversion table is a reliable reference for the underlying dates.
